Vision Screening

Vision Screening is a placement that allows Junior League of Lufkin (JLL) volunteers to partner with the nurses from the Lufkin Independent School District (LISD) to assist in vision screening. LISD is required by the State of Texas to vision screen students in grades PK, K, 1, 3, 5, 7 and any students new to the district regardless of their age.

The Vision Screening Committee hosts a mandatory training day at the beginning of the school year. JLL volunteers are then certified to conduct wall chart screenings. The wall chart is the official screening tool recognized by the state of Texas and requires that the students in the grades mentioned above be screened using the chart.

The Vision Screening placement is an asset to LISD. This is a very rewarding placement because it makes a huge difference in the success of students in the classroom. We hope it is another way to ensure that students have every opportunity to do their best in school and in other areas of their lives.

For interested volunteers:

A typical screening day: Arrive at the designated campus at 8:15 a.m. where the nurses have set up an area with screening stations. Begin testing by 8:30 a.m. and finish typically by 12 p.m. The screening days are Wednesdays and Thursdays from mid-September through the first week of December.
