JL of Lufkin Sustainer of the Year Recipients

The 2011 Sustainer of the Year was nominated by not one, not two, but three different members for consideration. After a very active League career, she has been a League Sustainer and will serve as an officer on the Sustainer board next year, in addition to her other volunteer service. One nominator said, "She is a 'behind the scenes' person who does SO MUCH for SO MANY, but rejects any public acknowledgment of her service. She is not one who volunteers, gives, and serves others for recognition or the spotlight, but because she genuinely has a heart and love for others and wants to make their lives easier. Lisa is THE hardest working, most dedicated, selfless person anyone could know. I have witnessed this on many occasions and cannot think of a more deserving person for Sustainer of the Year. I have known her for almost 25 years and her dedication to children and family are stronger now than ever before."

During her time in the League, she served in a wide variety of roles, including President. When the Follies came to town in 2001, she spent countless hours sewing costumes, entertaining the director from New York, creating schedules for practices and dance numbers, and ensuring that the fundraiser was run seamlessly and smoothly. As President of the League, she personally purchased all the Volunteer of the Month gifts for the recipients. Since becoming a Sustainer, she annually contributes to the Helping Hands campaign, purchases raffle tickets for both of our fundraisers, and is always available to help with any need the League has. She purchased and embroidered bags for Provisional classes for years, at her cost. This year, she embroidered the Volunteer of the Month aprons at no charge to the League. She also participated in Vision Training and Screenings.

At her children's schools, she helps with choreography of musicals and served last year as one of the chairs for Project Celebration at the High School. She also served as President of the Lufkin Middle School PTK for almost six years. Our Sustainer of the Year also serves as a lay reader at her church. Her most recent challenge has been to accept the job of the Angelina College Cheerleader Coach.

One of her friends once asked: "What would this world be without Our Sustainer of the Year? How would we survive without her spirit and giving nature?" We are so thankful that we don't know the answer. Lisa has deeply touched and influenced many lives and has served as a role model for service to others with dignity and grace. The Junior League of Lufkin could search far and wide and not find a more deserving candidate for this honor!
