Have-A-Hug and Super Saturdays
These two events are held throughout the year at the Museum of East Texas. Have-a-Hug is an outreach program to girls and boys in the 5th grade who are enrolled in Lufkin Independent School District. Each fifth grade campus’ (five in all) teachers select students to participate in this evening. Selected students bring a parent or guardian with them to the Museum for a Friday night art class with a local artist. These parties allow students to enjoy themselves, create artwork, and spend quality time with a special person in their lives and community volunteers at the Museum.
Super Saturdays is an outreach program to families in the community. Four to six Super Saturdays are held throughout the year, typically to celebrate major holidays. The Pumpkin Party, held the last weekend in October, is always a big hit! Children come to the Museum to decorate pumpkins, get their faces painted, make "magic" artwork, and eat delicious treats. At Christmas time, Santa comes to the Museum to spend an afternoon with community children and parents among the fifty-plus trees displayed in the Museum foyer. This spring, Super Saturdays are scheduled for the last weekend in February to celebrate Mardi Gras and a weekend in May to "Celebrate Paint." These fun-filled days are always a favorite with children and parents alike.
